is a documentary exploring the life and work of sculptor Eric Lindsey.

From shattering every bone in his body to battling terminal cancer, In Stone tells the story of a man determined to move forward, no matter what.

THE TEAM

JOSH GEYER

  • Josh is a Director & DP based in Chicago. His goal is to create films that explore the contradictory culture of the United States, using the lens to show the struggle between working class people and the systems that shape their lives.

DIRECTOR

STEVE MUELLER

  • Steve co-founded Vector Custom Fabricating, a company specializing in the fabrication of public art. Over the last 46 years, Vector has collaborated with many artists on their larger works, including Martin Puryear, Richard Hunt, and Inigo Manglano-Ovalle.

EXECUTIVE PRODUCER

  • As a young artist, Eric created monumental sculptures out of materials few others would touch, sending thousands of pounds of hand-carved granite, concrete, and marble soaring into the air.

Just as his art was gaining momentum, a tragic fall shattered every bone in his body. He was hospitalized for months, and spent years regaining the strength needed to work his beloved materials. Now, he is battling through terminal cancer to continue his art.

In Stone follows Eric’s progress as he carves one of his most personal pieces yet, and attempts to move past the epic and tragic events of his past.

  • In 2024, executive producer Steve Mueller asked me to create a short documentary on the life and work of sculptor Eric Lindsey. Eric, a relatively unknown artist who had been battling cancer for several years, was happy to share his work and story.

The short film was a meaningful piece for Eric and his family, and led to a wonderful friendship between us. I quickly became a fan of his work, so when he told me he had a new piece in progress, I jumped at the chance to see it.

At his apartment, Eric led me to his ‘studio’. While technically a bedroom, sleep was clearly a secondary function. The entire space had been built around a boulder of clay, which sat less than an arm’s reach from his bed. For several months, Eric had spent every moment his body would allow bringing this piece to life, working toward his ultimate goal of casting it in bronze - a material that would last for millenia.

A stonecarver by trade, the casting process is generally unfamiliar to Eric. Despite his inexperience, he chose it intentionally, believing the added challenge would give him the strength to stay alive.

Eric doesn’t know how much time he has. Every day is a battle as his body continues to fight him, but in spite of it all, he has chosen to keep moving forward. In Stone comes from my desire to record that strength, and to ensure that the efforts of an extraordinary artist and human will never be forgotten.

Through Eric’s story, we confront the harsh realities of working class American life, death, and the desire to move forward, even when we don’t know how.
